About Gabby Giffords

Gabby Jennifer Miller Giffords was born in 1983 in a small town in the Midwest. Her father is a high school social studies teacher and her mother works in the same school as a school nurse. She has two younger brothers and a younger sister. Ms. Giffords had a happy childhood full of warm memories. She grew up in a lovely older cape cod house with plenty of space and a very large backyard. Her family kept many pets including three cats, several bunny rabbits and two dogs as well as chickens that her mother raised in order to provide fresh eggs for the entire family.

Ms. Giffords left home to attend the University of Michigan where she earned a degree in English literature with a minor in sociology. It was there that she met her future husband Robert Giffords. Her husband majored in economics and then went to business school at the same college. She decided to earn a master’s degree in library science because of her love of books. When she and her future husband finished their graduate training, they were married. After a honeymoon in Paris, they returned to the Midwest to settle down and start a family. Her husband manages a local supermarket while Ms. Giffords helps run local young readers programs at area libraries.

They have a house in Dubuque Iowa where they raise livestock and grow many of their own vegetables. Gabby and her husband Rob are the parents of two lovely children. Her son Noah is nine and currently in fourth grade. He hopes to become a fireman when he grows up. Noah was born in May and shares a birthday with two of his first cousins. The Giffords hold a birthday each year for him and his cousins. Noah has a little sister. Ella is six and attending first grade. She likes to play with the family’s many dogs and help her mother harvest vegetables each year from their large garden.
